Welcome to Boulder, and while Deion Sanders got the ball rolling, his son to leads the Colorado Buffaloes with his own rocks...
An epic game between in state rivals Colorado State and 'CU', and I think it is ironic that everyone was watching. Well, through sunglasses, the team has the attention, and the 12:30 time slot this Saturday on ABC. They Water Buffaloes are gonna drown in Eugene, where the Oregon Ducks should supply pressure, but the expectations have been exceeded, and the 3-0 Buffs can coast to a resurgence of a once proud program.
While its been decades, the Colorado Buffaloes were once a touted team that instilled fear with a dominant running game. I personally felt that trepidation when I was coached by CU Hall of Famer Pete Brock. He was ginormous. I was in 6th grade, playing center, as his nephew Jack was my quarterback. The Brock family produced a number of linemen who thrived in college and the NFL, but he gave me advice I will never forget.
Paraphrased... 'you come against a guy who is a bull rusher, you take him on for a couple plays, and then when you hike the ball, you stand up and stick your knee out, and just fall backwards... he will take the foot off the pedal when he finishes singing soprano.'
The Brock brothers are legendary in the Portland Oregon community, and I had the profound pleasure of playing for Coach Ray. He was my first hero, for his attitude towards competition and his perspective on outstanding character. He taught the X's and O's to frequently distracted youth, but he always had my attention.
The Buffaloes walked out of the tunnel with its own swagger that did not necessarily reflect the viewpoint of the Brocks, but more of the newly transformed NCAA.
Lil Wayne walks out Colorado, but the game left everyone Weezy. Literally, an elevated game. An overtime thriller, highlighted by Shedeur's poetic performance, and a detrimental penalty that should NEVER warrant the death threats that a college kid should EVER endure.
Hype surrounds the program, and frankly, the rest of the season has draw, but is irrelevant. Ideally, the Buffs go to a bowl game, and the Sanders' reign remains in the spotlight for years to come. Regardless, Deion will pull more than celebrities.
Coach Prime's charismatic personality makes athletes WANT to play for him, not because of TV time, not because of championships, but for the true essence of Name, Image, and Likeness. He brings not only dimends to his kid's wrist, but his dime defense that led the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. And you will notice, Deion rarely talks on the headset, he saves it for his interviews where he "keeps the receipts." Yeah... you can find him on the sideline because the camera loves him, but you have to understand the phenomenon. He was the leading story on the syndicated show 60 minutes, and while clocking just 60 minutes on the field, is the talk of the world.
He starts his first team meeting communicating, in his own way, the he is "bringing his luggage."
What does that mean?
He is returning just 10 scholarship athletes from last years' squad, presiding over the embarrassing bottom of the PAC-12 finish. He is bringing his boys from HBCU Jackson State, to a prominent Power 5 program. And he is dominating the transfer portal, and basically, turning the Buffaloes into a business.
This is the new norm of the NCAA, and Deion is the first through the door. While he may get bloody, he transcends modern coaching into a blueprint for the modern game. I bought the shirt, not the 159 dollar standing room only Duck ticket, and it sold out from the start. So while college sports sold out, Deion makes it clear, "WE COMING." Just please, stay out of the way of that 500 pound Ralphie, the rampaging buffalo that normally leads out the team. I never pegged Deion Sanders for being a genius, but that has gotta be the stupidest thing in sports, and that's saying something.
